A gold wrench on a blue background appeared on my tab where there is usually an icon (i.e. gmail, firefox icon etc) Its only on one of my tabs (gmail) - other open tabs have the same old icons.

Ok, just searched for gold wrench and google and found this thread about it: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/gmail/tWdoRRyxlRI

Apparently its some kind of administrator/google apps thing that has to do with syncing with android or calendars or both. I don't really get it but it sounds like it's not a hack or a warning or a settings issue so I guess I'll just ignore it for now :)

Can you attach a screenshot?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.

Do you see that same icon on history items for that side?

Toggle the History sidebar on/off via "View > Sidebar > History" or Ctrl+H (Command+H on Mac)

  • Press the F10 key or tap the Alt key to bring up the hidden "Menu Bar" temporarily.

Thanks for your reply. Here is the screen shot.

I looked at the history for that tab and no wrench icon showing up there- in the history is shows the gmail icon.

Whoa, what is that? You would expect to see the red "M" (https://mail.google.com/mail/images/favicon2.ico).

If you right-click the page > View Page Info > Media tab, can you find the shortcut icon there and discover its path? It may help to sort by the file type and look for Icon.

Well I did that and I found the path (https://www.google.com/a/cpanel/uw.edu/images/favicon.ico) but I don't know what that is telling me. Except I guess it does show that it is coming from Google? But what the icon means or why it suddenly appeared I don't know. Very strange. Why so mysterious Google?

And 5 minutes ago, the wrench disappeared and has been replaced by the old familiar red M and envelope. Bizarre! Problem solved though!
