Update Not Working
I have 4.0 installed and I got a message that strongly recommended that I apply a security update, so I told it to do so. It downloaded and (I thought) updated and said it would be applied on restart. I clicked the button to restart and when it came back up, a second software update window opened that said "Connecting to the update server", but it never finishes. I have a 10mbs connection, so it's not a speed issue and, besides, it appeared to have downloaded what it needed before restarting. Please advise.

Click Help, then Restart With Add-ons disabled.
Next, click the button called "Continue without making changes". Firefox will subsequently restart in Safe Mode which means all your add-ons will be disabled.
Then go to Help | About Firefox and click the Check For Updates button to download version 4.0.1
Thanks for your response. I did as you instructed, but it's still not working. I then closed everything down and restarted my computer, then again tried it as you instructed, but it's still not working.
As Firefox is starting back up, I see a message that updates are being applied, then Firefox starts to open and again asks me if I want to start up in safe mode, to which I answer yes. By now another window has opened with the title "Software Update" and a message "It is strongly recommended that you apply this update to Firefox as soon as possible". I click the "Next" button and it displays a message "Downloading Firefox" with a progress meter underneath and under that a message "Connecting to the update server". The progress meter just keeps cycling and never comes back (see attached jpg image).

Firefox is not worth the trouble it takes to update it I plan to uninstall it from my computer if I cannot get updates by the end of the day. I have more important things to do than fool with a browser that doesn't work. I wll use IE at least I will be able to do something. Firefox doesn't even have a call number for support. I tried it once and junked it from my machine and am ready to do so before.
Repost your issue as a new question and be specific as to what your problem is, we're here to help. The solution may be quite simple.
So, Harry, with all the money you paid for Firefox, you'd think there should be a support line? Oh, wait, that's right, Firefox was free!
What I ended up doing to get around this problem was to uninstall Firefox, downloaded the newest version and installed it.
Hope this helps, but chill out. The people on here don't get paid for it.
