How do I set my options so that when I open a new tab it defaults to my homepage?
I am wondering if there is an option buried somewhere in the menus I haven't been able to locate that allows a default homepage ie google, yahoo, gmail, etc. to be opened when a new tab is opened.

No option to set that, but either one of these add-ons will do that for you:
New Tab Homepage: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/777 New TabURL: http://sogame.awardspace.com/newtaburl/
