Thunderbird freezing up. When I try to read or send emails, the screen freezes, the background fades to an off-white and it says "Not Responding" Any suggestions?

Does it not respond in safe/troubleshoot mode (hold Shift when launching TB)? What is the antivirus and its mail settings?
