Backspace keeps kicking me off sites where I'm trying to type things. How do I turn off this astonishingly irritating function?

Sometimes when I'm trying to correct what I've written in a forum post or whatnot, Firefox randomly decides that I meant to leave the page because I hit Backspace.

I cannot imagine who thought hijacking such a vital key was a good idea, but it is not one. I would like to know how to turn this function off. I spend a lot of time online typing, and while I am a relatively good typist, I am far from perfect, and frequently have to back up to correct things. (To say nothing of all the times when I change my mind about how I want to phrase things.) I cannot say exactly how many times I've lost a lengthy forum post because of this problem, but it's happened twice in the last two days, and I really don't need this while I have so many other problems going on.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

It shouldn't do "Back" when you are in a text editing field, but if you are anywhere else, it will. And yes, I feel your pain and disable it myself. Here's how:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste back and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.backspace_action preference and change the value to 2 and click OK.

Two isn't a magic number, any value other than 0 or 1 causes the key to do nothing (outside of a text editing field). See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.backspace_action

Thank you so much!  :D I'm so glad there was a way to turn this off! (Wish they'd made it a little easier to do, though...)
