I can't set up thunderbird to save received e-mail messages.

In previous versions of Thunderbird I could set up folders and give them names. Once I did that I could save e-mails that came in. In the latest version, I find that task can't be done. Can anyone explain why? I am so frustrated I am about to dump Thunderbird.
