Trouble with Thunderbird and gmail

I added my Yahoo! account to Thunderbird and it worked fine. Now, when I try to do the same with my gmail, it refuses to work. Every time I try, I get a message that says: "Configuration could not be verified - is the username or password wrong?"

Are you using two step verification with gmail? If so you need to create an application specific password to use with Thunderbird.

I'm not using a two-step process, but maybe that will help anyway. How do I do that?
