I got a new laptop and wanted to set up Mozilla Thunderbird for an existing Gmail account. I tried several times, all failed, with a warning "unable to connect with server imap.gmail.com, may be userid and password are wrong". But I can logon to my Gmail account (with the same userid and password) on Firefox website and on my previous computer, so the id and password are correct). And I was able to set up another Gmail account on Thunderbird in this new laptop (so the version of Mozilla is not the culprit) with the same server settings (port for incoming and outgoing mails, authentication methods SL/TLS, O Auth2 etc). Will someone please help me?

Hi:

I'm a longtime ubuntu (lubuntu, actually) user, and upgrading LTS versions every 2 years has been pretty easy til now: all I had to do was copy my .thunderbird folder to the home directory of the new system.

When I do that now for the pre-release version of lubuntu 24.04,, the new Thunderbird requires setting up the new profile from scratch, which is a pain, since I use T-bird for multiple accounts.

Is there an easier way of migrating my emails from my old profile to the new system?

Thanks!

Bill

I had to replace my hard drive and now have Win 11. I still have my Thunderbird account, but I cannot access the 3000+ emails in my folders. My Thunderbird started from scratch, no history, no files. How do I access and download my saved emails and folders from before the hard drive replacement? The Geek Squad couldn't help. Keep it simple, I'm not a techie.

Have been trying to upgrade for quite a while now but 68.12.1 is the last version that works. Any newer TB is mostly blank, settings can't be opened, the hamburger menu on the top right doesn't work. Account manager can be opened and shows accounts correctly.

Versions I tried: 78.5.1, 78.10.2, 91.7.0. None of them work.

Remedies I attempted to no avail:

  • Delete global-messages-db.sqlite
  • Create a new profile
  • Delete AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird completely (with backup)

I'm on Windows 10 (64bit 21H2). Downgrading to 68.12.1 restores full functionality.

My main motivation for upgrading is for a potential fix to the RSS address cannot be found bug.

Is there any chance I can get a newer version running?

I have tried following the video of how to transfer thunderbird. HOwever when it says to download and open thunderbird on new computer without setting up an account that isn't possible. Every time I try to download and open thunderbird it opens it with the partial transfer than my husband accomplished. It left out all my contacts and most of my archived emails. What archives it did move are not grouped by year. I need the complete contacts and archives. HOw can I get them transferred given that I can't open thunderbird without the messed up partial transfer automatically showing up? It prevents me from getting to a place where I can 'go 3 steps back to roaming' as that has never been an option

Hello,

So, my company want to trash their Exchange server for Gmail accounts. Welp, OK... but Thunderbird (last version) doesn't cooperate.

I tried to add a new account with the correct information. I set the IMAP/SMTP of Google as this is an other domain, SSL connection and OAUTH2 on both servers as needed. The Google window appeared, login and password is fine, I clicked on Authorize.

But Thunderbird doesn't want to create the account because of a sudden login/password issue.

The login/password is fine, I tried it on the browser and I did succeed the OAUTH2 process so this is not the issue. The Google account states that Thunderbird is indeed authorized.

Cookies are authorized.

I tried to change the password for something more stupid.

Heck, I even recreated a new profile without changing anything. In desperation, I even tried using the standard password method after activating the Less Secure Application in the Google account.

Thunderbird still refuses to connect to this account, with the same login/password error.

I don't get it.

Does someone have a solution before I shoot this retarded bird ?

Cordialy,

I have used Eudora for years, about 20 or more. Now I find myself with a dilemma. A secure email program I signed up for must have ports assigned to incoming and outgoing servers. Alas, not possible with Eudora, but possible with Thunderbird.

However, after reading several of the threads of migrating to Thunderbird from Eudora, it appears to be problematic--new addons, missing mailboxes, etc. It's hard to tell whether that's the norm or the exception. One of the threads I read was https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1228297 "Migrate Eudora mail to Thunderbird mail", which suggests starting with Thunderbird 17.0. That thread is from 3-1/2 years ago. Is this still the best way to migrate? Or is one of the Thunderbird migration tools a better and safer option.

I have literally thousands of saved emails and dozens of separate mailboxes and I don't want to lose them.

Hi,

I've recently upgraded to the 91 version and the order of the account folders have changed. i.e. the email folders and the off-line personal folders are no longer in their previous order. How would I change the order.

I tried moving them, but they return to their original position after every reboot of thunderbird 91.

Additionally, is there any good docs about folder paths to learn more about archiving or default settings.

Thanks,

We are just migrating to Thunderbird from Outlook, so quite new to Thunderbird... I have recreated an Outlook "rule", as a filter in TB to forward emails from a specific sender to a gmail address. The filter works fine on most of the mails, but fails on one with the error message:

"The mail server responded: Syntax error - line too long. "

However, the same mail can be forwarded from the inbox with a manual forward. What is the difference between the "Forward Message to" action in a filter -and- a right click and forward to the same mail item in the inbox? ...or does anyone have any other comments? The mail item that fails is an HTML mail of 178KB.

I'm trying to help an elderly friend move from Eudora OSE to Thunderbird. I found this closed thread on the forum - and I want to know 'how to back up the Eudora OSE Profile' - or any other help you can give re migrating from Eudora OSE to Thunderbird. (She has thousands of old emails.)

The tech person said,

"May I suggest, back up your OSE Profile, and give it a try.

And the other replied: "I took the tech's suggestion Backed up Euroda files and simply installed Thunderbird VOILA ! When I launched Thunderbird it simply accessed the same files and file structure (and settinge/etc) as Eudora and I didn't have to do anything ... awesome !"
