Closing multiple tabs and the "x" dissapearing since the upgrade to firefox 4.0

Question I have a problem with closing multiple tabs. I cannot close the tabs as the "x" to close the tabs (in the righthand corner) does not appear. it used to in the previous software version, but since the upgrade to 4.0, it has dissapeared. I "can" close it with a control/w command but not by clicking on the "x" in the corner of the tab as this is not longer visible. any suggestions as to how I can make the "x" re-appear? 

In addition I have a dell laptop. I have upgraded my adobe softwares flash etc, as recommended on your site, too.
