I can't type in Japanese when using Firefox 4?

If I select Japanese using the Mac OSX settings, I can usually type in Japanese right into a webpage. For example in Gmail or Blogger.

Using Firefox 4, my attempts at typing in Japanese do not work. Japanese text appears in a slim window along the bottom but I cannot transfer it onto the webpage I am trying to input.

Any ideas?
