Firefox web browser does not come up when I click the Firefox icon on my desktop.

I had an older version of Firefox on my desktop. I tried to download Version 4 but initially had no success. My computer kept telling me I had to "close Firefox before I could install the newer version. " I tried several ways to close Firefox but could not get version 4 to install. Finally, I thought I thought I uninstalled Firefox and successfully installed version 4. However, while I have the Firefox shortcut icon on my computer screen, I double click it and nothing happens. No browser comes up. Looking in the program section, Mozilla/Firefox is listed. What do I do now?
