Somehow I’ve pressed a combination of keys, which has completely changed (ruined) the screen display. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled but the fault must be in the profile file as it still comes up a mess.
Screen has reverted to black and white. with completely different layout.headlines are as was. some buttons are missing completely.

Other things that you can try:
Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

Can you attach a screenshot?
Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed the maximum file size (1 MB).

Thank you-- I think you got it--it's in the add-ons somewhere. I can now see buttons where before I could see only text, and colours are back..All I've got to do is play the add-ons one by one.
