Firefox high CPU usage

I love Firefox, however it really pisses me off when my laptop is just sitting there and all of a sudden Firefox maxes out my CPU. My laptop fan always turns on to cool down the CPU. The result is that my laptop draws significantly more power, and surprisingly this results in a noticeably higher electric bill.

The fix is to launch Process Explorer, search for the open file handle to "places.sqlite" and forcibly close it. Not very elegant (or safe), but that brings the Firefox CPU usage back to zero percent. Then I cannot access my bookmarks. So I assume Firefox uses a SQLite database to store my bookmarks. The bug is either in the SQLite code or the Firefox's usage of SQLite. It is not in plugin-container.exe as some have suggested.

My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1720 running Windows XP x64 edition. I always login and use my computer under a restricted user account, unless I am install new software.
