Firefox initially unable to connect once dial-up is established

I'm new to Firefox (3.6.6). I have dial-up service only. When I start Firefox it opens to a blank page, which is how I set it up. When I click on a bookmarked site, it then asks to establish a dial-up connection. I click OK, and a connection is established. All well and good.

But as soon as the dial-up connection is established, Firefox puts a message on the screen saying that the website can't be found (it doesn't matter what the site is). But if I then click on reload, Firefox connects to the website just fine.

How can I eliminate the extra steps, and get Firefox to connect as it should once the dial-up connection is established?

Many thanks for any help.
