Is it reasonable to ever expect Firefox will work on iOS?

Aside from poor performance and often inability to load web pages, will Firefox ever work reasonably on iOS? I just "upgraded" to 108, and it immediately broke. Opening to homepage resulted in instant crash. Have seen this behavior on earlier versions when accessing history, bookmarks, etc., but now it's homepage. I.e., the browser is absolutely useless unless opened directly from some other app. Since this happens so often, I'm thinking that "upgrades" should be avoided. This time, I had to delete the app and re-install it, which lost all bookmarks, etc., and it still crashed numerous times when trying to access bookmarks and some of settings. This is a most annoying and unsatisfactory app, and I don't want to spend my time trying to make it work. BTW, I'm writing this from Ubuntu, so that at least I can enter the complaint.

Addendum: Now, it will start to homepage, but crashes immediately when bookmarks page is accessed. Not a very useful feature in a browser that mostly can't display a WeatherUnderground radar page. So many bugs, so little time...

Hi

I am sorry to hear that Firefox for iOS is crashing. I hope that we can help resolve this for you. Before following the steps below, please make sure that you have updated both your iOS device and Firefox for iOS to the latest versions available.

As a first step, close down many of the tabs that you have open to as few as possible. Does this help reduce the incidence of a crash?

If this does not resolve the issue, open the iOS Settings app, select General then iPhone Storage. Find Firefox and select Offload App. Does this help?

Failing that, we will need to look into this in more detail with some logs from inside your copy of Firefox for iOS. This article will walk you through getting both crash logs and Firefox logs. When you have them, please file them here (a GitHub account is required) so that our developers can look into this further for you.

I hope that this helps.

Hi Paul, I checked the logs on iPad, but while there are MANY various log files, I do not find one with the date code as suggested. In fact, there seems to be no log file of any sort within 2 weeks of the issue date. Firefox was updated on the late night of Dec 23, 2022, or possibly early morning of Dec 24, 2022, and the nearest client log is Nov 11, 2022.

I can only describe the occurrences (I still cannot access bookmarks, but that has occurred several times with Firefox, then may eventually resolve with a subsequent update). I have a Firefox account, and sync bookmarks, tabs, passwords, etc., with my Ubuntu 20.04 Firefox.

Immediately following the "upgrade" via Apple Apps, attempts to open iOS Firefox crashed as soon as the desktop began to "draw", i.e., I saw a brief moment of the desktop, then the entire app disappeared. Repeated restarts resulted the same.

I removed the Firefox app from the machine, then re-installed from cloud (Apple has already tracked that I have the app). Obviously, I lost all user data, but at least the app itself would open. I re-established the Firefox account sync to my desktop, and was able to restore some dashboard/homepage bookmarks, etc., but at this point, it crashes each and every time I try to open the bookmarks page. I see the page for about 500mS, then the app disappears, repeatedly. As in the past, I will probably have to live with this until a future update inadvertently fixes it. For instance, the app was working correctly until the "upgrade" to 108.1, just last night. It did sometimes recognize the crash occurred upon re-open, and asked to restore bookmarks, but then would crash again if I tried to open the page. It seems to retain the pinned bookmarks on the dashboard/homepage.

This has become a regular occurrence, and is the reason I titled the complaint as I did. My iPad iOS is at version 15.7.2, the very latest unless I opt to move to iOS 16, which I am reluctant to do at this time. Either I can use Safari (which always seems to work), and have to manually insert hundreds of sites, passwords, etc., or I can try to use Firefox and accept a number of faults and failures. Firefox often refuses to even display some sites, so I have to resort to Safari, anyway, but that is not the topic of this discussion. I'm on the verge of dumping Firefox altogether, as these issues are commonplace. I have no further diagnostic information available, as none seems to be recorded.
