I'm trying to use Thunderbird Chat with Element. Chat reports that the other person is Unverified. When I try to verify, I get this message:

Myusername:matrix.org "is requesting to verify your key, but your client does not support in-chat key verification. You will need to use legacy key verification to verify keys."

The other person sees that verification occurred. I haven't seen anything on Google that addresses this. How do I fix it?
