In Thunderbird there's a apparent search box at the right of the menu bar (see pix in attached imgur link). Not sure if the search box is native to Thunderbird or if it's related to an add-on. In any case, it doesn't appear to do anything - except clicking on the text box and trying to enter text by hitting random keys - messages started disappearing from the inbox. I have no idea where they've gone - they're not in the trash or junk folders.

If I do a search for a term that I know is in one of the missing messages (in order to locate where the message have gone), I get results showing the missing messages but when I click on the missing message, the message open up blank.

Scratching my head.

Vanquished in Vancouver.

You may want to get familiar with the keyboard shortcuts used by Tbird. See them here Keyboard shortcuts - perform common Thunderbird tasks quickly

If the cursor/insertion point is inside the search box, then all typed characters should appear inside the search box. If you pressed random keys and messages disappeared, then the cursor was not inside the search box and you ended up performing random actions on the messages, like marking them as junk, trashing, archiving them and so on. What do you mean when you say the search box doesn't do anything? How did you search for the blank messages if the search box isn't doing anything?

Yea, the cursor doesn't show up when I click the text box so text doesn't get entered. If you look at the link I provided in the original posting, it shows the search box I'm referring to - i don't really think it's a search box - I don't know what it is and so far, turning Add-ons off, one-by-one, I haven't figured out what's installed it. I found the missing emails using the native Thunderbird search.

In any case, I must have been hitting the 'A' key as the missing emails were found in the Archive, as suggested by sfhowes .
