How can I attempt to launch an application using a custom protocol, but gracefully handle if not installed (e.g. handle "The address wasn’t understood" error)

Our company has a legacy Windows based application that gets launched from the browser. On other browsers, if the application isn't installed, I can gracefully supply UI to indicate reasons for the application not launching. On FireFox, I'm redirected to an ugly "The address wasn't understood" page. When using office.com, clicking on the "Open in Desktop application" button seems to be able to gracefully handle this situation. How can I gracefully handle custom protocol errors when the application isn't installed?
