I got an update today with firefox and they are using lockwise which when the update happened it didn't transfer any of my old logins or passwords. I checked out the old firefox folder that showed up on my desktop and saw all my saved passwords except they were encrypted. How can I get those into my current account?

Chosen solution

Hi Jeff, could you try copying two files from your old profile folder to you new one? You'll need to close Firefox during the operation. The hope is when you re-open Firefox, it will seamlessly use the old files in place of the new empty ones. Here goes:

Open your current Firefox profile folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, on the Profile Folder row, click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Exit
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup

Then right-click > Rename logins.json to something like loginsOLD.json. Also right-click > Rename key4.db to something like key4OLD.db. This is in case you need to undo this change.

Copy/paste the logins.json and key4.db files from the old profile folder to the current one.

Start Firefox back up again. Can Firefox find/read your logins?

Ps, it now shows two sets of key and logon files in the same place, but the passwords are not working.

1. How do I find the new profile?

When you open your profile folder from inside of Firefox, that is your currently live profile folder. Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data

2. Why won't it transfer my saved logins from Safari? (It only finds bookmarks).

I don't know. Please start a new thread for that issue if you want to pursue it.

Usually duplicate file names are not allowed in the same folder, so I don't see how that is possible. Something is wrong with what Finder is showing you.

But they are not duplicate since I renamed the files old, as you told me to.

Hi ross.forman, could you check what logins are saved in your logins.json file using the following method:

Drag and drop the file from Finder onto an open Firefox tab. After a moment, Firefox should list out its contents in a structured view. The passwords are not readable, of course, and the usernames will be encrypted if you use a Master Password, but you should be able to see what websites' logins are saved in the file.

Does this look like it has the data you were trying to restore from the old files?

Yes, the one I have labeled loginsOLD.json appears to be the one with all the passwords. I should but am not currently using a password manager.

Okay, then after you quit Firefox, you should take the logins.json and key4.db and move them out of your profile folder, and rename the OLD files:

  • loginsOLD.json => logins.json
  • key4OLD.db => key4.db

Hopefully then Firefox will read them.

Should I just put these folders in the bin, or empty the bin?

I discourage deleting because it is easy to mix things up! If you are certain you won't be needing them, you can delete them, or if you're not sure, just move them to another folder. There's no need to empty the bin in my opinion.

Yeah that chosen solution doesn't work.

My saved disappeared as of today, had it last night. only two were brought over.

Nothing in the steps provided work, I only have one profile no record of an old one. I need a lot of help there were a lot of important logins that are gone.

And no folder appeared on my desktop with old information.
