DDG does not know it is the default search engine

I am using Firefox 67.0.3 for Android. Duckduckgo is my default search engine. Every time I do a search, a popup appears at the bottom of the screen asking if I want to add DDG to Firefox.

Hi

As far as I am aware, this is a small advert from DDG to install an add-on in Firefox, mainly targetted at desktop users.

This issue is happening in Firefox (Mobile) Android not desktop. It is not about a DDG addon. DDG is specifically asking to be added as a search engine. The popup is linked to instructions on how to add DDG as a search engine. FWIW I initially installed the DDG browser app thinking that was required to use DDG as a search engine. When I found out the correct procedure for adding DDG as a search engine, I deleted the browser app, then added the search engine. Not sure if first having added app caused this problem. It is as bad as the Google message always asking me to change to Chrome.

I think the built-in search plugin sends an extra identifier so the site knows you are using it:

q=queryterms&t=fpas

https://dxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-release/source/mobile/android/components/search/searchplugins/ddg.xml

Actually, I don't notice any popup even if I remove that from the URL, so I'm not sure why you get one.

I think I found the solution. DDG search engine has its own settings which are available via a link to the right of the search box whenever u do a search. I think u could also go directly to https://duckduckgo.com. The particular setting is under "Other Settings". One would have thought the setting would toggle to off automatically once DDG was added.

The good news is, websites do not have direct access to read your browser settings. They can make guesses, and in this case they apparently guessed wrong.
