Thunderbird loses email accounts

Several times in the past several months Thunderbird comes up with the create new account prompts. My existing email accounts are gone. When I recreate my email accounts, a new set of folders is created in the AppData\Thunderbird\Profiles\Mail folder (i.e.: Local Folders-1, pop.centurylink.net-1, then Local Folders-2, pop.centurylink.net-2, etc.). I can copy the files from the older folders to the newly created folders and recover my emails.

Which file contains the mail folder names? Can I edit it to use the older email folder names? Why is it seemingly being corrupted?

Thanks.
