Gmail and OAuth2 issue

I'm trying to configure an existing Gmail account in Thunderbird 60.3.3 to use OAuth2 instead of a password. When I select OAuth2 an "Enter credentials" window pops up but contains this error message:

"You've reached this page because we have detected that Javascript is disabled in your browser. The page you attempted to load cannot display properly if scripts are disabled.

Please enable scripts and retry the operation or go back in your browser."

My understanding is that JavaScript is permanently disabled in Thunderbird, so how can I make this work?
