Synchronisation with Gmail

After downloading Thunderbird it downloaded all my mail from my web-based Gmail that I started in 2004. I didn't want all those messages in Thunderbird, so in Thunderbird I deleted all messages received and sent in 2016 and earlier. A few weeks later I found out all those older messages were also gone in my web-based Gmail. No doubt due to the synchronization between my local version of Thunderbird and my web-based Gmail. I contacted Gmail, my messages are permanently lost!!!! Is there a way to prevent this?
