By displaying a website in a tab, Firefox lets you have multiple websites open inside a single window. This keeps your screen from getting cluttered and makes it easy to switch between sites. This article covers the basics of using tabs.
Table of Contents
How do I make a new tab?
- To make a new tab, click the New Tab button on the right side of the last tab.
- You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + TCommand + T.
- When you create a new tab, the Location bar will be focused so you can just start typing the name or address of the website you want to go to — see Address bar autocomplete suggestions in Firefox for information on how to use the Location bar to get where you want to go quickly.
- You can also use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + TCommand + T.
Opening links in a new tab
- Normally, when you click a link, it opens in the current tab. If you want to open a link in a new tab instead, just right-clickcontrol-click on the link and select from the context menu.

Changing the order of tabs
- To move a tab to a different place on the tab strip, just drag it there using your mouse. While you're dragging the tab, a small indicator shows you where the tab will land.
Moving a tab to a new window
- To move a tab to its own window, click on the tab and drag it below the tab strip. Or, to move a tab from one Firefox window to another, click on the tab and drag it to the tab strip of another Firefox window.
Seeing all of your tabs
If you've opened more tabs than will fit on the tab strip, tab scroll buttons appear at each end. Clicking on them will scroll the tab strip left or right.
You can also click the List All Tabs button and select the tab you want from the drop-down menu.
Creating App Tabs
App Tabs allow you to always keep your favorite web apps like Facebook, Gmail and Twitter open and just a click away. App Tabs are small, can't be closed accidentally and open automatically when you start Firefox.
- To create an App Tab, just right-clickcontrol-click on it and select .
- For more information on using App Tabs, see Pinned Tabs - keep favorite websites open and just a click away
Creating Tab Groups
Tab Groups (also know as Panorama) are an easy way to visually organize a lot of tabs. You can put your tabs into groups, switch between those groups and quickly search through all of your open tabs. For information about creating and using Tab Groups, see Use Tab Groups to organize a lot of tabs
