TB trying to download all messages again
My TB installation got corrupted due to a hardware/disk issue. On restoring it from backup TB keeps trying to download all messages again. I know this is something to do with the popstate.dat file but I can't seem to stop it. What do I need to do?
Also, I had never noticed this before (because I never looked at the TB file system) but TB created multiple folders for the email account.pop.mail.yahoo-1.com up to pop.mail.yaho-4.com. Why does it do this and is there a way to get back to just one file? Is this something to do with TB crashing or what?
Is it using all of these files or just the latest and how do I know? All of these folders have a popstat.dat file and one has multiple following the popstat-1.dat etc.
I've no idea how to recover from this. Any help would be much appreciated.

The only way I can see to protect popstate.dat would be to make a copy after each shutdown. That file is the gate keeper for POP and keeps track of the last message downloaded. If corrupted, it doesn't know, so it starts fresh. The multiple copies may be due to some shutdown problems in the past, where thunderbird had trouble saving it. For the multiple folders, it would help to know how many Yahoo accounts you have.

I only have two yahoo accounts but the old one forwards emails to the newer one. So, from a TB point of view I only have one account.
The system was running for a very long time and I really never looked at the TB profile file system before. It is very likely that I had a number of system crashes during those years, plus a number of TB crashes and the odd power supply failure when the energy company had a failure. Could that be why I have so many yahoo-x files?
technically, to TB, you have two accounts if there are two accounts set up. You can check with folder is with which account by clicking 'account settings' pane and then clicking an account in left sidebar. Then, look at the local directory' at bottom of right side of screen. Yes, if the profile has been there for years, there could be detritus from prior accounts. Thunderbird does retain the server info, even when accounts are deleted. Once you identify which are the real ones, you can remove the others.
