Adding email accounts failing on new PC

david απαντήθηκε

I have a new PC. I have added five email accounts, three different hosts, with some difficulty. Thunderbird finds the details for others but then refuses with the message Authentication error. Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password.

I added Thunderbird by copying from my old PC. The hosts for those not yet added are the same as those added.

If the accounts on new PC are the same as on old PC, it is simpler to just copy the profile. See this: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/moving-thunderbird-data-to-a-new-computer

Adding email accounts failing on new PC: thank you I have followed the instructions about copying the profile but some email accounts are still failing to be created. I have added my late husband's email accounts but not my own similar ones. I may settle for using his but I am still puzzled why mine get "Authentication error". Sorry to be a nuisance. I was also advised to disable the account hub in Settings / General, then add the account from - New Account and use an application password in TB instead of the account password. However, I do not see how to disable the account when it has not loaded.

It may help to post screenshot of the account server settings pane. That would persons familiar with that domain to offer suggestions. thank you

I'm sorry but I do not know how to create a screenshot. However I took a copy please see below. Judy

This looked promising but on entering the password I got the reply Login to server imap.ntlworld.com with username JudyW.Excell@ntlworld.com failed.

Thank you very much. Judy

David. Thank you very much for your constant help and advice. Having tried with the imap.ntlworld. and failed at the password (of which I have a printed record) I tried manually putting it back to virginmedia.com as that is what the successful ones have. It still failed at the password. It is a puzzle because out of two host names - virginmedia (alias ntlworld) has had five successes and two failures sfhg.uk has had two successes and one failure.

I think I will have to just abandon those email addresses. I do have substitutes and think I have informed at least most of my correspondents.

Thank you again for your patient advice.

Judy

I regret being unable to assist. What you are experiencing is rather common, having email accounts switched among providers. The only safe way seems to be having a paid email account, such as fastmail, or one of the highly popular free ones, such as gmail, outlook or gmx. I wish you well.
