TB 78 please tell me how to add a 2nd email address to my TB acct keeping the 1st
Hi there, Ive been using TB for my telus (pop) acct for years. (I've successfully migrated my acct to a new laptop so I'm technical enough to do that just to give an indication of my skills). I cannot find a simple description for TB 78 of how to add a 2nd IMAP acct (GMAIL) without losing access to my already existing telus acct. Im happy to just have a 2nd TB acct on the same laptop as my first acct. I do not see instructions for that. Help would be great. Thanks all. Barb

(ANSWER-1) hi, i have shown how to do this here but for another mail-server att.net, so change that server-address to your needed, gmail addresses. please check the section "SWITCH BETWEEN..." shows how you can use same email-account in two TB mail-account , one TB-mail-account is for IMAP access & another TB-mail-account is for POP3 access.
but both IMAP & POP3 in same email-client app may not work at same time, i think for TB that is true , so one TB-mail-account either has to be disabled or email-address in one has to be changed.
some other email clients may allow using both IMAP & POP3 protocol to access emails for same account.
if you have two different Thunderbird = TB , that is, one is the default/system TB , and another is Portable-TB (this can be your second TB) , then , in one you can use IMAP , and in another you can use POP. here i have shown how you can use second-TB for TB-old-profile , but use the other instruction there without the old-profile usage instruction.

Thanks atEric. This is over my head. I understand you're not recommending trying to access pop and imap accounts together in TB. But you lost me on the portable TB accounts. Is there not a way to have a 2nd TB acct no matter how the first one was created? The idea then to be able to view them individually?
(ANSWER-2)
i mis-understood your info, i thouht you wanted to add one GMAIL and one TELUS account, and you want to access same email account via both IMAP & POP3. so my info are based on that.
sorry.
but now i understand , your TELUS email is accessed by your TB via POP, and you want to add a GMAIL account also in same TB, & you want to access it via IMAP, right ?
hmm, if thats the case, then adding a second account in TB would have no-reason to conflict, as two TB-accounts have two different email-address , though from same (gmail) mail-service provider.
or, are you saying, you already have telus (pop) in TB , & then, when you want to add gmail (imap) then TB is giving some error ? or telus account stops working ? what exact error from which exact account ?
gmail can be accessed via "OAuth2" auth-method & also via "Normal-Password" auth-method.
if you choose "OAuth2" auth-mehtod for GMail access, then enable Cookie in TB, and you would need to approve the TB app for OAuth access with your GMail web-access password.
if you choose "Normal Password" auth-method for GMail acces , then you would also have to specify your gmail web-access password in the password field.
gmail imap uses port 993 & imap.gmail.com , SSL/TLS
gmail pop uses port 995 & pop.gmail.com , SSL/TLS
gmail smtps uses port 465 & smtp.gmail.com , SSL/TLS
gmail also supports mail-submission port 587 & smtp.gmail.com , SSL/TLS
you can use imap+smtps servers , or , you can use pop3+smtps servers combination.
or, you can also use imap+submission servers , or , you can use pop3+submission servers combination.
TELUS may have enabled SMK feature, as many ISP are recently upgrading their systems.
in their mail web-access site, you find option to generate/creat SMK (Secure-Mail-Key) aka Mail-Key, etc.
create two SMK code, as you have TWO email-cleint app, one in new laptop, & another in old laptop.
in the field of password, you would have to specify SMK code,
when you use smk-code as password, then auth-method (authetication-method) must be "Normal Password".
if telus does not have SMK feature yet,
then use it like these:
telus imap uses port 993 & imap.gmail.com , SSL/TLS telus pop uses port 995 & pop.gmail.com , SSL/TLS telus smtps uses port 465 smtp.gmail.com , SSL/TLS telus mail-submission uses port 587 smtp.gmail.com , STARTTLS you can use imap+smtps servers , or , you can use pop3+smtps servers combination. or you can also use imap+submission servers , or , you can use pop3+submission servers combination.
so here is two combinations-A:
in TB mail-account-1 , GMAIL accnt , you specify: in server imap.gmail.com , port 993 , Normal password , SSL/TLS out server smtp.gmail.com , port 465 , Normal password , SSL/TLS
in TB mail-account-2 , TELUS accnt , you specify: in server pop.gmail.com , port 995 , Normal password , SSL/TLS out server smtp.gmail.com , port 587 , Normal password , STARTTLS
so here is two more combinations-B:
in TB mail-account-1 , GMAIL accnt , you specify: in server imap.gmail.com , port 993 , Normal password , SSL/TLS out server smtp.gmail.com , port 587 , Normal password , SSL/TLS
in TB mail-account-2 , TELUS accnt , you specify: in server pop.gmail.com , port 995 , Normal password , SSL/TLS out server smtp.gmail.com , port 465 , Normal password , SSL/TLS
if your current TELUS config match with combination-B, then, create/specify gmail as shown in combination-B.
if your current TELUS config match with combination-A, then, create/specify gmail as shown in combination-A.

(ANSWER-3)
please also see my previous response.
and for TELUS email account to work in a new TB, you may have to set this specific settings: goto Options/Preferences/Settings > Advanced or Generral > Config-Editor (about:config) > accept risk > type: security.tls.version.min or just type: security.tls , the settings security.tls.version.min will appear, in new TB (v78+ series) it is 3 in old TB (v68 series) it is 1
so in your new laptop , if you use v78 series TB, then set the security.tls.version.min to 1 and try to access TELUS in that new TB. if it works, then that means, TELUS is still using older TLS protocols. if it DOES NOT WORK, then Problem is somewhere else, so REVERT back changes, set previous setting back to 3.
GMail(mail.google.com) already using latest TLS protocol, so it does not create conflict/problem in new TB (v78 series) , so TLS changes not necessary. many ISPs are still using old+unsafe TLS.
SEE OTHER OPTIONS IN TELUS: More info on TELUS : https://www.telus.com/en/on/support/article/telus-email-as-alternative-application
EDIT : added note later on: Revert TLS changes

OK so there is hope to keep it simple it sounds like. I have not met with any errors because I haven't begun to try to create a 2nd TB acct (gmail imap) to collect incoming mail from my gmail acct. There are no clear instructions in TB help on creating a 2nd TB accounts on the same laptop. I don't want to experiment with adding an account and find it has replaced my (telus email POP) inbox in my existing TB which has a gazillion emails from years back which I just cleaned up and moved everything I want to keep in local folders. Make sense?
(It would be a bonus to be able to view both accts in the same inbox but if that is not recommended then I'm ok with that. )
regarding your last comment, my current TB acct is working just fine. I get all my telus mail into it.
i updated my ANSWER-2 response in above, please see if it make sense.

I appreciate your effort to explain but It is so complicated for me. I do not have a new laptop. I have been updating TB and it is delivering my pop telus mail just fine using TB 78.5.1. So I just need to know if it is possible to create another TB acct to recieve my gmail (IMAP) and not lose my existing acct. Thanks Barb
Adding extra accounts is as simple as starting from File/New/Existing Mail Account (press Alt if the File menu is hidden), then entering your credentials. The settings for gmail accounts should be detected automatically. At the end of the setup, the Inbox and other folders for the gmail IMAP account will download to TB.
Since the Telus account is registered on gmail servers, you should check that the Telus account sends on smtp.gmail.com with the @telus.net User Name, while the gmail account sends on smtp.gmail.com with the @gmail.com User Name; two separate servers, with different User Names. Select an account in the left pane of Tools/Account Settings, then look at Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the right pane. Both the Telus account and the gmail account send on a smtp.gmail.com server, but you must select the server that has the matching User Name (click Edit SMTP server... to check).
Disregard the advice to change TLS settings, as both accounts do not require any changes to function in TB.
To view messages from both accounts in a single Inbox, select View/Folders/Unified.
sfhowes, I will do as you advise re adding my gmail acct. That is pretty simple.
Telus is migrating my telus email acct to a gmail platform in a few days and instructions to set up on TB will be available then. I may wait to add the gmail acct to my TB acct till after the migration.
Thanks heaps sfhowes and atEric Barb
i have done the migration before, so you may wish to consider this approach, instead of adding the account from scratch. First, copy the existing POP mail, Inbox, Sent etc., to Local Folders. Then, Tools/Account Settings, Server Settings, change the incoming server to pop.gmail.com on 995, SSL/TLS, OAuth2 authentication, User Name = your telus address; Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom left of Account Settings, change the outgoing server to smtp.gmail.com on 587, STARTTLS, OAuth2 authentication, User Name = your telus address. Give the Description a distinct name, e.g. TelusSMTP, to distinguish it from other smtp servers which may be added. Next, check that cookies are allowed in TB Options/Privacy & Security, and remove the Telus passwords from Options/Privacy & Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords. Finally, restart TB and enter the Telus account password in the OAuth2 window when prompted, and complete the authorization.

sfhowes, are you suggesting I can do these changes before migration day?
I have already cleaned up my pop telus account on TB in the past few days in anticipation of this migration. I moved all my inbox emails to local folders and subfolders in TB. (Didn't do anything with sent but will do). I intend to switch to imap when they do the migration.
Do you still suggest the change as you've described?
Thanks heaps
and when?
It depends on when 'migration day' arrives. The user I did this for was in BC, and it was done several months ago. I don't know if the migration is deployed province by province, or over time, but you could check with Telus. Also, if you're switching from POP to IMAP, the procedure is a bit different, as you can't switch just by changing the settings in TB - you have to add the account as a new IMAP account. In that case, File/New/Existing Mail Account, enter your credentials, click Manual config., and choose IMAP server type with imap.gmail.com on 993, SSL/TLS, OAuth2, User Name = email address; smtp.gmail.com on 587, STARTTLS, OAuth2 authentication, User Name = email address. If for some reason you can't select OAuth2 in the authentication drop-down (a bug), click Advanced config., where you can choose OAuth2 in Server Settings and Outgoing Server (SMTP).
Once the IMAP account is working on the gmail servers, you can remove the Telus POP account in Tools/Account Settings, Account Actions at the bottom of the left pane. If the Telus POP account was the Default account, set the new IMAP account as Default, and then the POP account can be removed.
I should have said, migration day is scheduled for dec 9. So I'm getting ready. If i switch from pop to imap as per your instructions, will I lose all my local folders on my current pop acct on TB? All subfolders were created on TB not the telus webmail site. THANK YOU
No, all mail in Local Folders is unaffected by the IMAP account or webmail setup. If you wanted to back up the local mail to an external location, Ctrl+S on a selection of messages would save them as eml files.

Thanks so much. I get it. Will let you know how it goes Wednesday. Have a good night. Barb
Dear sfhoues Where we left off was the procedure for creating an imap acct in TB after the telus/gmail acct is working on the gmail platform. It is. So I followed your instructions in TB to set up my imap acct. But I'm having a little trouble as some fields in the server settings I seem not to have completed so I am completing them by going to server settings and adjusting both outgoing and incoming according to your instructions. I have a few questions:
When I choose a default smtp server (assuming I manage to complete it as per your instructions), does that mean it is default only for that email acct(email address i am setting up)? Or will all outgoing mail from various email addresses I intend to add in my TB acct go from the one email address associated with "default"? Based on your answer I will make a choice and proceed.
I already deleted the pop acct because I have all my old emails in local folders so i think this is all good so far.
The Default designation for smtp servers is somewhat obsolete, as the modern approach is to point each account to the matching smtp server, as explained in my first reply. As long as you are careful to choose the correct smtp for new accounts, the Default server won't come into play.
sfhowes...interesting. I thought I entered everything as you suggested and found I had indeed created the account but it would not synch with the new telus/gmail acct. FYI, my solution because I had already deleted my pop account on TB and had nothing to lose was to just follow the telus instructions which automatically finds the server info and one enters the password after that and that worked. Hope that makes sense. But as an aside, I did lose all my contacts that I had imported into thunderbird years ago from my blackberry and original gmail. The newly created ones in TB since then are there. I will continue that conversation on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1317363
Thank you. I find your communication quite easy to follow. Much appreciated. Barb
