For months I've been struggling with tabs crashing. It's been getting worse lately; sometimes an individual tab will crash and sometimes the whole browser will crash.

  • It seems to happen more frequently on what I think of as "modern" (dynamic and interactive) sites than on flatter web-pages, but mostly it's "random"; there aren't pages or kinds of pages that I've noticed it never happening on. In some cases a new tab will crash before I even enter an address.
  • It frequently, but not reliably, happens to the same page if I persist in trying to get it to load. That is to say, if I "restore" the tab, or re-open it right-away from the link, it will frequently crash again.
  • It seems to happen most often when a new tab or page is being loaded, or in response to something I do within a page, but even switching back to an existing tab will sometimes trigger it.
  • At this point whole-browser crashes are almost as common as tab-crashes.

I've been trying to get it fixed, obviously.

I'm running Firefox v80.0 on Pop!_OS (a ubuntu derivative) v20.04 LST. The machine is a System-76 laptop, about 18 months old with not hardware customization (and I don't think any interesting software customization).

Stuff I've tried:

  • Updating firefox: The problem has persisted across at least two new versions of firefox.
  • Updating flash: I don't have flash installed.
  • Update Linux: I've been keeping my system up-to-date. I think the problem has persisten since before I upgrated to v20 (from v19), but it's only gotten really bad in the past couple weeks.
  • Safe Mode: I tried safe mode for a couple days, and I was still getting crashes.
  • Disabling extensions: I've tried disabling different combinations of extensions, including all of them, without effect.
  • Re-installing firefox: I completely un-installed firefox and removed the ~/.mozilla directory, then re-installed firefox from the package manager.
  • Checking my ram: The particular commands I tried to see if there was any problem with my ram were `memtester 8192 3` and `memtester 16000 10`; both of which reported not problems.
  • Turn off hardware accelleration: Neither turning off hardware accelleration nor disabling WebGL helped.

I've been submitting crash reports. Here are some recent ones:

You appear to be using Firefox from your Ubuntu distro and that version doesn't have crash symbols on the Socorro server, so it isn't possible to get useful info from the crash reports.

Try the Firefox version from the official Mozilla server if you currently use a version from the repositories of your Linux distribution.
