I switched from IE to Firefox. Working in Exact Online bookkeeping, in IE 11 I could preview pdf documents attached to each record without any problems, I don't want it to pop up in another tab or window, I would like to see a preview in the same tab as I am working in. This is impossible in Firefox as far as I know, all I see is a grey square. My workaround is that for Exact Online I use an IE shortcut instead of a Firefox shortcut, not my number one choice. If I change the action of a pdf to Adobe in settings, I get a pop up, which costs me lots of time to switch between the pop up and the record in Exact online. So this is not a solution.

Please help me.

Are you sure that you have set the Firefox PDF setting to preview in Firefox? To change the default reader for viewing PDF files in Firefox, follow these steps:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and click Options (Preferences for Linux or Mac).
  2. In the Options (or Preferences) tab, select the Applications panel.
  3. In the Search field, type PDF to find the Portable Document Format (PDF) entry.
  4. Use the drop-down menu for that entry under the Action column, to select your favorite PDF reader. To view PDF files in Firefox, choose Preview in Firefox.

For more information, see View PDF files in Firefox or choose another viewer.

If you have already done this, try the PDF Test Page by the Yukon Department of Education to see if this PDF loads properly.

If it does, then the PDFs created by Exact Online are not compatible with the Firefox PDF viewer. The Firefox PDF viewer is under constant development and there are some advanced features, such as filling out forms, that are not compatible with the Firefox PDF viewer.

I am absolutely sure about my settings, I already stated this in my question. The pdf's in Exact Online are from various origins, not just one type. The original documents are dragged into the program, they are invoices.

As I said: There aren't any problems if I use IE.

There is no question about filling out forms.

If the test PDF that I linked works without any issues, then the PDFs that are provided from Exact Online are not compatible with the builtin Firefox viewer. Filling out forms was simply an example of an advanced feature that the Firefox PDF viewer doesn't support.

I assume that since Exact Online is a bookkeeping software, you are not able to link to an example document for us to test, which is understandable.

The only other thing that I can think to suggest at this time is to see if you are able to view the PDFs in Firefox Safe Mode in case it's an issue with an extension or setting on Firefox.

Weird, without any changes suddenly I now suddenly can preview pdf's in Firefox in Exact Online. I will probably never find out how IE had no problems whatsoever and Firefox gave me grey screens.

Thanks for your contributions Wesley.

I'm afraid what "solved" the problem will always be a mystery
