For a month or two, when I load google, the page loads and i have time to enter 5-6 characters, then the page flickers and wipes the form.

My guess at what is happening is that the page is not fully loaded at the point the form is presented, but Firefox is trying to be helpful and present whatever info it can as quickly as it can. Then, when the page does fully load (including all the background stuff), it does some quick check and then re-presents everything. However, this is really annoying, as I want to start typing as soon as the form loads, and I don't want this to be wiped just because firefox has decided it's ready. I don't want to be teased with the promise of a quick google search, only to find that it's slower because I forgot to wait for the page to flicker to tell me it is ready!

Hi, please give this a try : Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove your Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. This process does not remove your Firefox profile data (such as bookmarks and passwords), since that information is stored in a different location.

To do a clean reinstall of Firefox, please follow these steps: Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.

  1. Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
  2. After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu New Fx Menu and click the close button Close 29).
  3. Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    • Windows:
      • C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    • Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
    • Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Install Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
  4. Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
    1. Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
    2. Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

Is this with many websites, some, a few?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?

Thanks to Plkshadow and FredMcD for your quick responses. I confess I was skeptical that generic "switch it off an on again" approaches would work (which is why i didn't try them originally), but having posted the question I felt obliged to try them, and to my surprise, doing a clean reinstall did fix this issue.

For the benefit of anyone else reading this, I didn't follow all the above steps, I simply clicked the 'clean reinstall' button under troubleshooting.
