Whenever I prepare draft mail with some attachment (any format such as doc / xls / jpg / pdf etc.) I cannot open attachment directly to see if correct file has been attached.

When I add an attachment to a message, the filename is added into the attachment window. If double-clicked, the file will either open or ask me what to do. This action is based on my preferences in 'Tools - Options - Attachments - Incoming' Tested with PDF, DOCX, MP3, WAVE, ODS and JPG. All OK on my box.

I also cannot open attachments in draft messages. I am a Mac user so the existing information does not help me.
