I can view recent messages. however, there is no content on older messages, just header info.
I am able to read all content on all recently rec'd emails. however, emails older than a few days old either display no content at all except for the header information or, in some cases the content in older emails consists of lines of nonsensical script.

Right click the problem folder and select Properties. Then Repair Folder.
Thanks for reply, unfortunately the course of action recommended resulted in the emails being completely deleted.
This is caused by corruption. The messages were already too corrupted to be saved. Read this article on maintaining your email to help prevent this in the future. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_(Thunderbird)
