How do I fix it when an e-mail account disappears from the left panel of the main interface (with inbox of another account on right)..
I recently added two accounts to Thunderbird and everything seemed to be going smoothly. Today I was using one of the new accounts and wanted to change to my old Edurostream account. But it was nowhere to be found. The new accounts and another old account are there. If I go to "accounts" Edurostream is still there, but there is no way I know of to get from there to the inbox for that account. There is no error message. I am using the latest version of Thunderbird (24.6)

I take it that if I remove the Edurostream account, any mail previously downloaded from Edurostream will remain in the Local Folders inbox.
Yes. old mail will remain in Local Folders as these folders are on your computer.

first try: View > Folders > All
Thanks for trying. I'm not sure if is Thunderbird's intention or not, but while my Edurostream account does not appear as such, the subfolders, including the inbox, do. While that obviously confused me, I can live with it.
If I make another account my default account, what will I lose, if anything? If I remove the Edurostream account entirely? I wouldn't want to lose anything already on my computer, such as downloaded messages or subject folders.
Default account:
The default account is the account which displays at the top of the list in both the Folder Pane and the Accounts Settings.
This is set in the account settings:
- Tools > Account Settings
- select the account name
- click on 'Account Actions'
- select : 'Set as Default'
- click on OK
The top one in the list is already set as default so that option would not be available, if already set as default.
re: If I make another account my default account, what will I lose, if anything?
you would lose nothing, it merely reorders the list.
re: remove the Edurostream account If you remove the account, you will be removing everything stored in the account. So, if you wish to save emails in the Edurostream account, you would need to move emails in any of the Edurostream mail account folders, including Inbox, Sent, any folders you created etc into Local Folders before removing the account.
When you have all emails safely stored in Local Folders then you can remove the account.
- Tools > Account Settings
- select the account name
- click on 'Account actions
- select 'Remove account'
- click on OK

Thanks again; we're making progress. The Edurostream account is at the top of Account Settings. Under "Copies and Folders", sent messages, archives, and drafts are set to appear in "Local Folders". Edurostream does not appear as such in the folder pane, "Sent", "Archives" and "Drafts", all apparently from that account, do appear under "Local Folders", together with "inbox", "Templates", "Archives" (empty), "Junk", "Trash", and "Outbox" (also empty). Subject folders follow. Does that change your previous comment? Presumably at least the subject folders would remain if I removed Edurostream.
If you have all your emails going to Local folders, this sounds like you have a Global Inbox for the pop mail account.
You can check this here: Tools > Account settings > Server Settings for the mail account. click on 'Advanced' button. Is this selected?
'Inbox for a different account' and 'Global Inbox (Local Folders)'
Global Inbox accounts do not show the mail account name in the Folder Pane as it does not use those folders. See info on Global Inbox account: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Global_Inbox
If you remove the account, the emails will remain in Local Folders. If you change the settings as described above to point to 'Inbox for this servers account (also see image below - words may be a bit different as not an image of latest version), then you will see the mail account in the Folder Pane with it's own set of folders. New mail will go to those folders, but old mail will remain in Local Folders.
Many thanks. My settings send new mail from the Edurostream axxount to the Local Folders inbox, but not the others (which works fine for me). After reading your latest plus the zine article, I take it that if I remove the Edurostream account, any mail previously downloaded from Edurostream will remain in the Local Folders inbox. Please correct me if I am wrong.
