My Thunderbird (version 115.12.2) is running on a Windows 11 system. My profile has multiple accounts configured as IMAP to multiple email services. I also have the Status Bar and Activity indicator enabled. Randomly, both indicators will show busy for an extended period of time. When I view this in the Activity Manager I see one or more folders hung for 10 or 20 minutes downloading one message out of several. This occurs in multiple accounts and servers.

I have researched this and attempted the fixes presented. I have cleared the cache files and compacted and rebuild email folders as suggested, but the slow update still occurs.

Then I decided to try and capture a ProMon.exe trace to see what is happening. What I found was Thunderbird.exe was spending all of the time while hung access the following file: C:\Users\MyUser\AppData\LocalLow\Intel\ ShaderCache\4a5eb0e65e559fc08e65ecb2fa9d650817ae895582a7a7ede162866d3e47a05a, like it was stuck in a loop.

When Thunderbird is operating normally, it is accessing this file but only for short period of times. Research says that it is ok to delete the files in this folder. I did that and it seemed to help for awhile. But it started happening again.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Is there a Windows thing to look further into? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Forums - I am a new Thunderbird user based on on-line research suggesting Thunderbird as the best way to relieve gmail account with local mailbox archiving. My gmail is out of storage by end of the month and my plan was to move a bunch of old messages into local Thunderbird mailbox to clear room in the google account. I have set up Thunderbird successfully with gmail using IMAP connectivity option. Thunderbird shows same folder structure as labels in gmail and displays all messages from the oldest to newest. So then I tried the "archiving" by setting up a folder structure under Thunderbird's Local Folders. Specifically, to start with I I set up Inbox_archive and Sent_archive and used right click Move To > Local Folders > Folder name to move old messages from live ...@gmail.com tree to Local Folder tree. Since there is also an option Copy To, my understanding was that Move should be different from Copy by also removing messages from gmail and move them to Local folders. At a first glance these steps seemed to work. I see unique old messages in Thuderbird Local Folders. I don't see these messages in Thunderbird's gmail inbox/sent and I also don't see these messages when I search in on-line gmail in:inbox and in:sent. I noticed, however, that google storage size didn't budge. I moved a thousand of more messages in the same way (thinking maybe older messages were just small) and the storage still didn't decrease. I then looked around in on-line gmail and found the messages that I presumed "archived" still sitting in gmail's All Mail. This explains why the storage size didn't change. I searched on the forum and on-line and can't get a confident answer on what am I missing to actually remove the messages from gmail - ideally in the most straightforward manner in one action as a cut and paste from on-line to local folders. Are there any SMTP settings that I should have so that Thunderbird's "Move to" actually removes messages from on-line account? Or is there a different archiving command/strategy I need to use?

I am hesitant to do any more trial and error on my own since I already messed up my gmail by having now thousands of messages still sitting in All Mail without proper Inbox and Sent tags and, thus, would appreciate the recommendation from someone who is familiar with my use case.

Thank you.

Many messages have suddenly disappeared from local folders. But not all folders were effected. I compacted and repaired some of the affected folders but messages did not return. I deleted the .msf file for some and restarted TB. No effect.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks, Bob

I am really really distraught right now. It took me two weeks to get the time and focus to write a long reply to a company's nice email to me. Stayed up till 2am to write it. Deliberately wanted to re-read it in the morning before sending. Gone. Nowhere to be found. I pressed "Save to draft" before closing my laptop. But not saved. This account actually has a "draft" folder, unlike most of my other accounts in Thunderbird, which I also cannot figure out and no one has helped me with.

In both my desktop older installation (now updated) and my new laptop installation, when I go thru Account Settings and check off what I want, it all changes when I leave the setup. I uncheck the startup page, and when I open both versions of Bird, the startup page is there again. Same with table/card setup, and other options. Isn't there a "save" in Account settings? Thanks, Stacy

Storage Space Issues and IMAP Synchronization Settings in Thunderbird

Good morning, We are a company with around 10 employees and we use Thunderbird as our email client across multiple workstations. Some of our IMAP-configured mailboxes are used on several PCs and have grown quite large, causing local storage space issues.

I recently discovered that Thunderbird offers settings to manage synchronization more efficiently — for example, by limiting the download of messages to the last X days (e.g., 30 days), or by excluding certain folders from automatic synchronization. I’m referring specifically to the options under: Account Settings > Synchronization & Storage > Advanced…, and also the Disk Space section.

I tried changing these settings on an already configured account, but the changes don’t seem to take effect — messages are still being fully synchronized. I would like to know:

   If I’m doing something wrong in the process;
   If these changes only apply when configuring a new account;
What is the recommended way to manage large IMAP mailboxes in a business environment to reduce local storage impact and improve performance.

Unfortunately, our email provider doesn’t offer alternative solutions unless we completely change the IMAP configuration, which we would prefer to avoid.

Thank you in advance for your support — I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

My Thunderbird updated on Thursday (9-11) I believe. Since then my autoback comes up when I close the program but it no longer backs up to OneDrive. Typically it engaged promptly and was done within 30 seconds or so. Now it just sits on this screen and doesn't backup.

Hoping whatever is stopping this can be fixed. I am a user of the program and not a programmer so if there are steps involved please know you need to provide the A,B,Cs if you will!

I am using Thunderbird 128.14.0esr on Debian. I tried to import an internet calendar but it was unable to find it until I changed `webcal://` to `https://`.

The issue is basically resolved already by replacing webcal in the URI but it might be better to add support for this scheme too.

I get the error message "... connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.primus.ca timed out. Try again." I can receive but not send. Not sure if it worked on 140.1.0 as I hadn't tried to send anything on this laptop since July 27, but it DOES let me send from same Email account on my other laptop which is still on v. 128.13.0. The Email account is with Primus (small Cdn. co.), who have no technical or support info on their site. I haven't touched any account settings in Thunderbird; Outgoing server setting is same on both laptops. Welcome any thoughts, although I'm not techy. Thanks!

Outgoing email fails due to SMTP port timing out

Greetings,

I am currently having inconsistent results sending mail.

I can send an email from my IMAP Webmail interface but sending the same email from my THUNDERBIRD POP Desktop fails.

The error indicates that the SMTP outgoing connection from the host has timed out...

I have tried to check the mail host ports and they are all open ... e.g.

Test-NetConnection tulip.bradmark.com -Port 465 Test-NetConnection tulip.bradmark.com -Port 587 Test-NetConnection tulip.bradmark.com -Port 25

Is there a THUNDERBIRD configuration that might be affecting this?

I do realize that when you send an email there might be several hops and failure points and I can't help that, it is the nature of the internet.

Howerver, this looks more like my local configuration/network?

Thank you.

Jean-Pierre

PS I have temporarily disabled my firewall and VPN for testing, it has made no difference.

Hi. First off, a BIG thank you for all the hard work you have put in and now give it to us for free to use. Your generosity is mind-blowing. I am using TB on Linux and Android. My email life depends dramatically on the use of aliases. When I send mail luckily TB let's me "customize the from address" and I can use anything my email provider allows me to use. That's fantastic. But there is a bug. When someone replies to my email and I hit reply to answer their reply, TB PUTS THE WRONG EMAIL ADDRESS INTO THE FROM FIELD. It puts the main email address, not the aliased address the email I am replying to was sent to. Once I did not pay attention and hit send - and my cover was blown. My main email is for no one to see, just the aliases. Please, PLEASE fix this bug. When replying to an email, the from should ALWAYS be the address it was sent to. This is really important and if you fix this, as far as email goes, my life will be perfect.

On the Android version,, things are much harder. Itis impossible to compose or reply to aliased emails so I can only use it for reading.

I believe that if you fix the alias issues, for people whose email provider allows aliases, email usage patterns will truly be revolutionized. Thank you
