When I first start Firefox it takes all the computer rsources for about 5 minutes, no matter what the web site I choose. Why?

When I start Firefox it takes all the computer resources for about 5 minutes. If I start AOL, it is particularly bad, but any other web site will do similar things. It freezes the computer badly enough that I can't get a response from ctrl+alt+delete.

If I leave Firefox running and simply use it, I do not have the problem, even if I hibernate the PC.
