Firefox updated itself and now all my saved passwords are missing. Is there a way to fix this or do I have to start all over again adn hopefully be able to remember all my passwords.

It is not clear to me personally exactly what happened, but I must suggest that whilst installing or uninstaling you should not use the option to remove settings, because that will remove data ie your passwords and bookmarks.

Firefox update settings are configurable see for instance: updating firefox

If you did use the remove settings option , here is one thread about that problem that had a happy ending.
