Should all mail folders allow compacting?
I'm running Thunderbird 140.1.1esr (64-bit) under Windows 10. I'm used to my Inbox folders being compacted, either automatically, or sometimes I do it manually before a backup. But just for the heck of it, I tried compacting other mail folders: Draft, Sent, Archives, Trash, and nothing happens! A right-click on any of these folders has Compact as a viable (not grayed-out) option, but it just does nothing. No message at the bottom of the screen or little blue progress bar. Is this right?

Thanks, ThundaMike! If that's indeed the case, then there is no problem. My mom used to quote, "No news is good news," but an indication that there is no news would at least give a hint that all's well.

Depends on whether messages have been removed from those folders.
Thanks, Wayne. Yes, I regularly empty the Trash folder, completely, and delete unwanted Sent messages individually. I would think, however, that asking for compaction would initiate the routine, which either would proceed near-instantly, or take a while to recover empty space (or whatever) where necessary. Usually one sees a blink or glitch... or something... when an action is requested, but on these Trash and Sent folders, it's as if the Compact command isn't even recognized. If that's normal, then okay; just not expected.
It may first be checking the current state to see if the action is required (aka: is anything in the queue?). If no, it may not initiate event the 'blip' as you accurately described it, @ElectroJim
