Hi:

ThunderBird (v78.4.3) Crashes Upon StartUp:

Fault Module Name: nvd3d9wrapx.dll Fault Module Version: 25.21.14.2531

This is the latest nVidia Driver for my Adapter.

It appears FireFox had issues with this Module in the past:

Any Ideas

That's key here. In v78 we enabled HWA (hardware acceleration, graphics) by default. I suspect Windows 7 systems are going to be more susceptible to problems.

Here is what I suggest - you mentioned you were able to start by disable the nvidia graphics - open tools > options > type accel > uncheck "Use hardware acceleration". Restart Thunderbird. You should then be able to reenable nvidia.

If that fails, your options are:

  • totally disable nvdidia - thunderbird won't be any much faster with it
  • use nvidia management software to disable nvidia graphics for just thunderbird (IIRC I was able to do that on one of my systems)
  • update to windows 10 and/or newer graphics hardware - decent non-gamer graphics cards are quite affordable.

Does TB crash when you start in safe mode (hold Shift when launching)? If it doesn't, it may be because hardware acceleration (Options/General/Indexing) is enabled in normal mode (safe mode disables it). If it doesn't crash in safe mode, reply here for how to disable acceleration without running TB.

The NirSoft report doesn't help much. If the Nvidia driver is the only cause of the crash, you may have to revert to an earlier version. Open Device Manager and roll back the driver.

dhraoi.allta,

Has your crashing stopped?

more options

I am still crashing, up to v78.5.1

The issue began with the jump from v68x to v78x

The nvidia driver has been in place since April 2019, there are no updates from nvidia.

I was able to get ThunderBird to start by removing the nvidia driver, and it worked a couple of times after the nvidia driver was reinstalled; then the crashing resumed. It does not get past the PassWord Prompt.

The symptom presents the same as the previous FireFox issue with this driver identified above.

Still trying to determine the best course of action, other than replacing the computer without nvidia hardware.

It is my experience nVidia HardWare has a history of nuisance on systems not dedicated to gaming; I have added nVidia to my Black List for Business Systems.

Wayne:

I was not able to disable the nvidia graphics, so I:

1. Removed the nVidia Driver 2. Started ThunderBird 3. UnChecked "Use hardware acceleration" 4. Installed the nVidia Driver

So far so good...

I am unable to change the Graphics HardWare as the System is a NoteBook.

As far as Windows 10, probably would have solved it all. However, I have been unable to UpDate this System as yet, due to exterior influences on my durational flow...

I appreciate your input and advice, which led me to the solution.

Thanx
