I have discovered that my thunderbird is 32 bit version 68.11 whereas I have a 64 bit computer. Instructions for installing the 64 bit program state uninstall 32 bit first. I do not wish to lose everything in the process - how do I keep my displayed emails and accounts. Would I notice any improvement if I did migrate to the 64 bit version?

Hey, I did that just a couple of days ago and if you try to install the 64-bit version it should ask you to "update" your Thunderbird version and everything should be fine without uninstalling anything.

If you wanna try and remove the 32-bit version first be sure to backup your profile folder first, here's the instructions: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data

Have a nice day!

Actually it should not prompt, at least not for version 78 - both Firefox and Thunderbird have been changed so 64bit installs into the 32-bit program directory. As a result, when you start it should use the same profile.

No.

Thank you for both replies. As I apparently would not notice any improvement if I changed to the 64 bit version I will stay with the 32 bit, to be on the safe side, as things often go wrong.
