Ive been using Thunderbird forever and love it. Why do I read that it isn't a Mozilla platform? Does this explain why I can't uses Thunderbird to compose email because the text turns out jumbled? Thank you.

What you have heard is true. https://blog.mozilla.org/thunderbird/2017/05/thunderbirds-future-home/ It would have nothing to do with your issue. Start Thunderbird in Safe mode and see if it works better. You can do this from the Help menu.
