Why is Thunderbird immediately crashing with a segfault after upgrading to version 45?
I recently upgraded Thunderbird on Arch Linux. When trying to run Thunderbird it usually immediately segfaults. If I retry it multiple times it will eventually run. So far, for safe mode, it has taken from 1 to 7 attempts, for normal mode from 9 to 26 attempts. Once in, it seems to run fine. If I revert to my previous version (38.7.2) it runs with no problem.

Do you get crash reports submitted?
And there are many problems being caused by addons. Please try https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/safe-mode to see if it goes away.
No crash report found. As mentioned in the OP, even safe mode segfaults several times before it finally runs. It doesn't seem to matter whether I disable all the addons or not and I'm only using 4, one of which is the new calendar. I've tried moving the .thunderbird configuration directory which should hide the addons, in which case it will creates a new .thunderbird and then segfaults, again with no crash report.
Are you installing from http://getthunderbird.com/ ?
No, from the Arch Linux repository.
