I click on new tab, click on link, and begin tykping. Cursor keeps jumping to address bar. How to stop?

I will click a link. Example, my bank. The page comes up, I click on password, and begin typing. In the middle of me typing, it will jump up to the address bar. Big issue there! If I don't notice that it did that, anyone looking over my shoulder will see my password in the address bar! Sometimes this happens up to 3 times! EXTREMELY annoying!!! I don't have any add-ons, except for Java, etc, and I've tried it in safemode. Doesn't work. Help, or I will leave FF forever!

Hi Jasger74, This sounds like an autofocus preference. In Option/Preferences > Advanced > Accessibility there is a feature to search as you start to type. Please make sure that none of these are selected.

Since this is a preference what you can do is start a new profile or delete the pref.js file in the Profile Folder to reset the preferences. Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data

If you have any questions about this we are happy to further investigate.

Could you observe this a bit and see whether a particular letter is triggering the jump? For example, if your username was qwertyuiop but you noticed it always jumped after the y then we might focus on whether u had somehow becoming a hotkey to jump to the address bar.

For the record, the standard hotkeys to select the address bar are:

  • Ctrl + L
  • Alt + D
  • F6

Thanks, but no. It doesn't matter what I start typing, it jumps up there.

Thanks, but nothing under "Accessibility" under advanced options is selected.

Can you detect any pattern? For example, after x seconds it happens, or after clicking in particular kinds of fields it happens, et cetera.

Meanwhile, I agree with the idea of creating a new profile as a test. A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.

Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):

firefox.exe -P

Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.

Click the Create Profile button. I recommend using the default location suggested (so skip the option to choose a different folder). Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.

Any change in the cursor jumping behavior?

When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.
