I have used Firefox for years and had AVG free antivirus installed also for years. Tonight I had a popup window open from AVG informing me that AVG no longer support Firefox and have uninstalled their antivirus addon with immediate effect.

Does anyone know of a Free antivirus program that is any good and still supports Firefox?

What did the AVG add-on do?

Many of the major security software vendors have browser add-ons that add a little extra to their core features/functions, which run outside the browser. It's not clear which of those add-on extras are important to you.

Just to be clear: the core functions of (A) checking anything you download and (B) intercepting and filtering all your browsing requests are implemented by security suites outside Firefox and do not require an add-on.

At the moment I'm not sure that the AVG free antivirus software I use is even part of the "AVG online Security" the popup refers to.

As to what it did or did not do as part of Firefox, the only thing I've ever noticed is occasional connection aborted messages usually because of "Url : Blacklist" which is apparently a list of URLs that AVG have identified as being virus laden, but whether that is a firefox core activity or an AVG addon feature I have no idea.

Either way it's a further indication that companies are viewing Firefox as less popular and removing their support:-(
