Flash doesn't work on any site and when I look at the page info the *.swf files are all greyed out which I assume means they are disabled.

I can not see http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager07.html so those settings I am unable to change.

I have un-installed firefox, deleted everything, run version 22, run in safe mode, disabled and enabled flash, all with the same issue. None of my add-ons is causing the issue and flash does work in IE.

I am running Windows 7 64-bit & Firefox 23, does anyone know what is causing the issue? I don't have the ability to use Chrome and it's really annoying going to asite and realizing that I need to cut and paste into IE just to be able to see it. This only happens with embedded flash, I can see HTML5 no problem (ie, turn off flash, I can still see Youtube Videos).

Here's an example on the aforementioned Flash settings site with the right click in the bottom right corner, the page info showing the emded flash (since it's selected it's not greyed out but it's greyed out and in italics) along with the white area where the flash is.

  • it's not plug-ins (I just re-installed all of them)
  • It's still present in safe mode
  • It's still present in 22
  • I did a clean install of both 23 and flash
  • tried disabling and then enabling flash

If you use extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) that can block content (e.g. Adblock Plus, NoScript, Flash Block, Ghostery) then make sure that such extensions aren't blocking content.

Yeah I already tried that.... even with extensions disabled or not even installed; I still have the same issue. I even did the reset thingy when you restart in safe mode and still have the same issue.

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.

Please report back soon.

If clearing cookies doesn't work then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies is corrupted.

Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and delete other present cookie files like cookies.sqlite-journal in the Firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

You can also try to enable third-party cookies from visited websites or always.

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"

I had already tried clearing the cookies and creating a new profile.

I deleted the cookies.sqlite and had the same issue.

Is there possibly a registry setting that's turning it off?

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

Ran McAffee and MalwareBytes, deleted temporary files, checked running programs and open network ports/connections with all browsers/applications closed.

I'm at a complete loss :-(

I just reinstalled from scratch completely (removed both IE and Firefox flash plugins & saved settings) and added back my extensions and plugins. I've pretty much done everything but re-install windows. Not sure why flash is only disabled in firefox and not in IE as it works fine there.

In your screen shot, it seems there is a rounded tab above the area where Flash should appear that says "Block...". I don't think it's a built-in feature of Firefox. Does that still appear in Safe Mode or after the Reset?

Is there anything about your connection settings or your security/privacy software that might misinform sites about your browser identity, for example, masquerade as Internet Explorer? Sites that use a script to generate the Flash content may mistakenly use incompatible coding in that case. You can try a test page on my site to confirm that your user agent shows as Firefox: http://dev.jeffersonscher.com/jstest.asp

@jscher2000 - that's from AdBlock+ and even with no other plugins or extensions, flash still shows up as disabled in firefox
