Check marks not showing in "options" spell check not working at all.

more options

I am using the latest but not greatest version which is 13. The spell check feature is not working at all. It works in FF 3.6.28 when I remove this great upgrade but of course I always get the standard ,"your version of Firefox is outdated"

The check marks in the option tabs do not show at all. I have to guess if I have something checked or not.

I have I think the dictionary installed. I went to the add on page for American English and added it. It said it did but when I look at my add on list it does not show.

I like Firfox I really do, but I may have to completely delete it and relunctantly use Chrome, because spell check works in it.

It works in Safari, it works in IE, It works everwhere except FF13.

Are you using a custom theme (Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes)?

Did you try Safe mode?

  • You can see which dictionary is selected if you right-click in a text area and open the Languages submenu.
  • Open the "Add Dictionaries" link to install a dictionary if you do not have one.
  • Make sure that [X] "Check Spelling" in the right-click context menu is check-marked.

You can enable or disable spell checking globally:

  • Tools > Options > Advanced : General: Browsing: "Check my spelling as I type"

You can look here for dictionaries:

I haven't heard of checkmarks being invisible. Could you post a screen shot of your Options dialog?

Also, as an alternate way to enable spell check, you can use the about:config preferences editor.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the filter box, type or paste spell and pause while the list is filtered

(3) If layout.spellcheckDefault is not set to its default value of 1 (check multiline text area controls) or 2 (check both multiline and single line controls), double-click it and choose your preferred setting.

Does that make any difference?

If that doesn't help, we should check for an add-on conflict. A standard diagnostic for that is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.

First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)

Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode using

Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

In the Safe Mode dialog, do not check any boxes, just click "Continue in Safe Mode."

If spell check works correctly, this points to one of your add-ons or custom setting as the problem.

If it still doesn't work, we would have to come up with another theory.

Well I typed this with all the addon's disabled and after doing what you said in about:config. The integer was 0 and I changed it to 1. It did not with the addon's enabled but does now I disabled them. Now,spell check is working properly. So where do I start trying to figure out which one is conflicting? What type of add on would conflict? I can't post a screen shot nor can I list my add ons either because I am in safe mode. I guess I will start back in normal mode and disable them all except one and go individually until it does not work.

Now, tell me why my check marks in Options do not show up.

They don't show up in Safe Mode either? I'm using a basic theme, so I'm sure your screen looks different than mine. I generally create the screen shots by using Alt+Printscreen to grab the dialog image, paste into Paint, save as a PNG, then attach to my reply using the "Add images" form below the box.

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

This is what I see in any option tab. The only way I can tell if it is checked is by that broken line rectangular box around it. If I were to uncheck it it would go away. No black check marks show a tall in any tab.

BTW thanks for helping me solve the spell check problem. I started FF in normal mode and disabled all the extensions except the dictionary.

Restarted it and spell check worked. I continued adding extensions and restarting and had no problems with spell check. I have all the extensions I need to use and spell check continues to work.

The spell default being set to zero and not one was the initial problem. At least finally some one logically worked with me to solve this annoying dilemma.

Now let's figure out the no check marks in OPTIONS showing problem that is bugging me to no end.

Could the solution be hidden in about:config too?

Yes, I was using Classic Compact. I changed it to the default and now all the check marks work! I will probably continue to use Classic Compact but I will just change it back to the default when I need to go in to options. Thanks again sir, for solving my problems. I changed my Avatar to something appropriate for the way I feel about my having issues I can not resolve myself when using Firefox.
