Using Vista premium. All of the upgrades beyond 3.6.28 stop at checking addons and then it says firefox not responding. I will get an icon but it does not open. Have tried turning off firewall and Norton internet security 2012. Have deleted existing firefox before install. I have no idea why these versions from 4 to 11 won;t install properly.

Instead of deleting the entire Firefox profile or testing a new one you can just delete or rename these files in your Firefox profile:

  1. extensions.ini
  2. extensions.cache
  3. extensions.rdf

Make sure you have Firefox closed when you do this. Open Firefox up after you've deleted/ renamed them and the problem should be solved.

So, I'm assuming you have tried going to www.getfirefox.com and downloading and installing Firefox from there?

more options

Yes I have done this and it doesn't matter if it was from there or File-Hippo or Major Geeks etc. It always stops at the same point of download ,when the message comes up looking for add-ons.

Tylerdowner, I just went to getfirefox.com and tried downloading the beta version 11. It stopped downloading at the same point with the exception , the message block was there but it had no message. As before when I started to close it it said firefox was not responding. As a note. I have never had a problem downloading anything before this.

Are you getting any error messages or is it just hanging and crashing when you try to install?

more options

Ok, then it seems like your old profile may be corrupted. Let's try this to get it working.

Read https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Managing-profiles. If you can get the profile manager to appear it will make life much easier. Simply create a new test profile, start 3.6.28 with that, then close Firefox. try using your download from getfirefox.com to install Firefox 11 again.

If it starts up, awesome, we've narrowed it down to a corrupt profile, and all we have to do is transfer your old information to your new profile. Recovering important data from an old profile gives steps on how to do that.

If it doesn't work, we'll have to try some more steps here.

That did the trick I was able to downlad 11 beta. I normally don't like to use beta versions so I went back to 10.0.2 and that downloaded fine. Now to see about bringing over my old bookmarks etc. Thanks so much for your help.

glad that worked! Just so you know, Firefox 11 is not beta anymore, and contains major security fixes. I would upgrade ASAP.
