Loosing Open Tabs
Why am I losing my open tabs. I have it set to open where left off.
This has happened about 3 times recently. It is a huge inconvenience as I have multiple windows with a lot of tabs open in each. It is too active and difficult to save them all as bookmarks. I thought if you were signed into your account, that would automatically remember what your open tabs were.
I think it has something to do with clearing history. A couple times that function seemed to stall. Like this time. This doesn't happen all the time though. I can clear data & history, have all my tabs sitting there, and they are restored when I go back in, as usual.
I am going to have to change browsers if this continues because I need all my working tabs, many which I will not even remember, to get back to manually.
I just turned sync on (was reluctant to do that as I don't know all the specifics how it works). My mobile phone open tabs did not wipe out as I feared probably because looks like I'm not signed in there. Might have lost everything there also. But does having sync turned on keep things stored in your account so it can't get wiped out?

SYNC IS NOT A BACK UP SERVICE. It's for syncing data with 1 or more devices. See last screenshot with list of devices and versions of Firefox.
Tabs loose does happen, but as long as you files in your profile folder (sessionstore-backups) dated before the issue. You should be able to restore the session. see screenshots
The 2nd screenshot shows the files in my folder and I could restore a session from Feb 28th by closing Firefox and then renaming the file to sessionstore.jsonlz4 and then moving it into my profile folder, replacing the current on.

Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox Title bar, especially if you have multiple windows or Private Browsing windows open to prevent losing tabs in unnoticed windows.
- "3-bar" menu button -> Exit (Power button)
- Windows: File -> Exit
- Mac: Firefox -> Quit Firefox
- Linux: File -> Quit

I always close through the 3 bars & Exit, to retain all open tabs.
I'm not sure how this is happening.
My settings are set to open previous tabs and not to wipe out history. All tabs are lost. There is no history.
I just lost at least one open window with a bunch of tabs. A different scenario that the other times.
I was hovering over the thumbnails to select which to go to and the X accidentally got triggered and closed the window. When I go back in, I can't restore the lost tabs.
In Google you can always restore tabs.
I've gone down the rabbit hole of the restore session procedures a number of times in the past without success. There is ever an old backup to work with.

If you "Clear history when Firefox closes" with "Browsing & download history" enabled, all your tabs will be cleared. This doesn't happen if you do the clearing manually with the same setting (Ctrl+Shift+Del).
A profile backup system is currently being worked on (Bug 1883052).
