Closed email tabs, all reopen when Thunderbird is restarted after a shut down

more options

For the past couple of weeks Thunderbird has exhibeted some unwanted behavior. #2 I often shut down T'bird with multiple emails, each in their own tab. Recently, I seem to have accumulated multiple open email tabs. I have gone back through the open tabs and closed them (there have gotten to be quite a few, and it is a fair investment of time to get them all closed). I am not deleting them, just closing the tab each is on. Then I close Thunderbird. Next time I open Thunderbird, be it a few minutes, a few hours, or the next day or so, all the emails I closed are once again opened upon startup. This is making a huge number of tabs be open, and I am unable to make them stay closed. I am not deleting them, just closing the tab each is on. Why is this occuring (started a couple weeks ago, maybe around the same time Firefox auto-updated to v92 or 93, can't recall which.

Help/Troubleshooting, Profile Folder, Open Folder, close TB, delete session.json. Restart TB a few times and see if it retains only the tabs that were open at last closing.

Thank you sfhowes. It did work, although I messed up a bit I think, in that I deleted the emails (there were a lot) and then took your advice above, except I deleted the session.json file and the sessionbackup file before I closed T'Bird. It worked, but when I reopened the ones I had not left open before I closed TB are not there - not a big problem, as I close these email tabs; I did not delete them, so I still have the ones I intended to leave open, even if they are at least for the minute, closed.

Thank you very much for your help. It is much appreciated

Can you write this in English? As my dad use to say, this is as clear as mud. "Help/Troubleshooting, Profile Folder, Open Folder, close TB, delete session.json. Restart TB a few times and see if it retains only the tabs that were open at last closing." I've been using Thunderbird for as long as I can remember and this is what we get when it doesn't work correctly?

I also can't comprehend what might be ment with this solution suggestion:

"Help/Troubleshooting, Profile Folder, Open Folder, close TB, delete session.json. Restart TB a few times and see if it retains only the tabs that were open at last closing."

I am using Thunderbird Version 91.4.1 (32 bit) and hopefully someone could help by running down the squenze of page downs to click and settings to change therein?!

Thanks in advance and regards!
