How to search for message sent from a given contact in a given time range which has attachment as well
I love Thunderbird, but there is one issue, what I can not figure out how to solve. It is searching for emails. Nowadays we are sending and receiving huge amounts of messages, and a fast and reliable search engine is a must have tool for any email client. An issue what I regularly face is to find emails sent by a given sender within a time interval (before/after date, or a number of weeks, months, days) and filter further whether it has included any attachment. Unfortunately I was not able to find any reliable way to accomplish this, even though it works intuitively in Gmail and MS Outlook as well. I am pretty sure there is a solution to this, but even though I have googled it multiple times in the last year, I was not able to find anything.

To search an account, create a filter with Classic Search (Ctrl+Shift+F) that looks like the attached picture. Save as Search Folder if you perform this search frequently. A more general search across specific folders can be made with a Saved Search (File/New/Saved Search...).
Thanks! It have the functionality I was looking for. Are there any keywords and syntax which would allow one to specify these directly in the search field (Ctrl+K)? That would be even better!
BTW: is there any way to open the Classic Search from the menus? I've been browsing through them, but even know that I know what to look for, I was not able to locate it :) It seems like to be hidden from me. Until then I try not to forget the Ctrl+Shift+F combination.
With Global Search (Ctrl+K), the results show a histogram, and clicking on a column narrows the date range by year, month, week etc. In the left pane, Filters, Attachments, shows messages with attachments, which can be filtered according to file type.
From the Menu Bar, Edit/Find/Search Messages... or 3-bar menu icon, Find, Search Messages.
I have no idea how I missed that... Probably I was fixed on the word "search" instead of "find". Many thanks!
I knew some of the options in the Global Search results, I've just terribly missed the possibility to define whether a contact was sender or receiver. It displayed only the option to "be involved". I found it really frustrating.
