How do I go back to the previous page on the same website because today the back arrow didn't work!

more options

I was visiting a website that sells books. I clicked on the brief promotion about a book to learn more. Once I got to that page and read the information, I wanted to return to the page before. But the back arrow which is usually white was greyed out or otherwise not working. Why did that happen? I didn't see a "close page" direction on the page I was on to close up that page, either. Is that a function of the website that I was on, or is there another way to return to the previous page besides using the back arrow located to the far left of search screen? I've gone to HISTORY. Is there another way? Or, do I have them all covered, and it's likely the website's issue? Lastly, my computer cannot upgrade to the very latest Firefox. I'm using 48.0.2. Could that also be an issue? Please advise! Thank you very much! This is the only website browser on my computer now that I can use to get to LinkedIn - so I do thank you for that!

First, you are limited in what versions of Firefox you can run because of your MacOS version. See: Firefox support has ended for Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8.

If the Back button is grayed, the current page may have loaded in a new tab. You can try closing the current tab, or using the tab bar to switch between tabs, to get back to the previous page. To close the current tab you can use a variety of methods, such as:

  • click the X icon on the tab on the tab bar (however, this icon may not be shown if there are a large number of tabs)
  • right-click the tab on the tab bar > Close Tab
  • use the Command+w keyboard shortcut

If the Back button is not grayed, but clicking it seems to have no effect, try right-clicking (or Ctrl+clicking) it, and use the list that drops down to skip further back in the tab's history. This sometimes is needed to bypass a page that redirects forward again.
